NFA 2: Winkton ALG COMPLETE!!

History:
Winkton Advanced Landing Ground was constructed on farmland between the villages of Sopley and Bransgore by an RAF Airfield construction unit in 1943. the land was leveled and Sommerfield Tracking was put down. In 1944 further types of tracking were added before the first aircraft arrived. At least one Blister hangar was erected for the maintenance of aircraft, but living accommodation was in tented areas. The two runways of 1500 yds intersected at a point on Derritt Lane, which had to be built up to runway level. On 4th April 1944 the 404th Fighter Group of the 9th USAAF arrived from America and the three squadrons of the group, 506, 507 & 508 received their P47D Thunderbolts at Winkton and began training.
Their first mission over France was on 1st May and from then until D-Day the Groups fighter-bombers carried out attacks against transport targets and V1 Flying bomb sites.
After D-Day they supported US forces advancing from St. Lo. The Group moved to a French airfield on 6th July 1944. The tracking was then taken up and the land returned to farming in 1945.

The completed scenery features static P-47 Thunderbolts, steel tracking runways and taxiways, Blister hangars, trees, encampments, refueling etc.

Winkton ALG can be downloaded from here it is 798Kb in size.
